It wasn’t supposed to be this way. You thought you paid your dues. You helped the elderly across the street, found cats up trees, and made sure to park your bike in designated bike spots in accordance with by-laws. Sure, what you did as a day job wasn’t glamorous by any means, but you still felt appreciated in some way. You found happiness from people’s smiles and warmth in the way they’d look at you. Just being a good person felt better than any wage you ever made. So when neighbours started slamming their doors on you and kids stopped following your bike around, you figured you’d put that good heart of yours to use. You’d destroy the villains terrorizing the town, and shatter the malaise that had tightened its grip on its inhabitants. In a way, you considered yourself a hero: someone who would rescue the town from the brink of oblivion and recover everyone’s hopes and dreams. Once you did, everything would be better again. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. A good heart was all a hero needed, right? You didn’t have flashy powers like superheroes, a butler to help clean up your uniform, a fancy name for people to call you by. You didn’t have money or power. You worked at a pizza parlor, for pete’s sakes. All you had was your bicycle, and what you thought to be a pretty good sense of justice. Even if you weren’t meant to be the protagonist of the story, you reasoned, you’d help as best as you could from the sidelines. You memorized the WANTED FOR MURDER posters all over town, kept a notebook of what you heard on the news, and fashioned up some make-shift weapons for self-defense, if it got that far. You were going to help. But tables turn quickly when tension builds and reason falls by the wayside. You hear the wave of discontent rising, plead with the crowd that they should all know who you are, that you’re no murderer. You beg to people who you’ve knocked on the doors of, grasp at the collars of those who you’ve helped. Your voice cracks as you scream that you know all of them and their kids by their first names, a desperate plea to their better sides not to prosecute an innocent. But their distant, icy glares tell a different story, and you realize that all your good deeds were for naught. In their minds, you were just any other suspect, a person shoehorned into the role of villain. Everything you had done, everything you just said: inadmissible evidence in this court of law. And in this court, justice is swift; there are no arguments from the defense, merely a closing statement consisting of violence from a town turned vigilantes. As you lay on the ground, the very people you had hoped to rescue besieging you with kicks and punches, one thing runs through your head before a particularly savage blow extinguishes your life. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. It’s already too late when the mob realizes that as well. |
