DUE TO A technical failure, the POS has been relegated to a space beneath the counter. In this defunct state, it’s been redubbed the Piece of Shit system, no matter how strongly she asserts that POS stands for Point of Sale. (These two acronyms, the part-timer reminds her, are not mutually exclusive.) In the meantime, they’re cash only and tracking sales in a Google Spreadsheet on his brick of a laptop. It’s the nerdiest ensemble she’s ever seen; a Linux machine plastered with decals. They’re mostly tech startup stickers with minimalistic logos: a hexagonal bee-and-honeycomb, an abstract butterfly, a compass rose, a wooden sword, and something from a law firm. To top it off, he’s also got a sticker from NASA depicting a satellite with the text, “Go forth, Voyager” sweeping an arc beneath it. He catches her eyeing his machine and gives her a look so defensive it could play linebacker. By the end of the day, his spreadsheet is short two books. “Wait, nevermind,” he calls out from the floor space around the counter. “Found one. It fell behind the Piece of Shit.” By the end of the day, his spreadsheet is short one book.
