I can place my bird cages on either side of my room, left or right, every night, and if there is any movement in the neighboring room, they will get nervous and fly away. Thankfully they have all had very quiet nights, and haven't flown off even once, the darlings.

I MEAN I THINK THEY ARE OH MY GOD I THINK I NEED TO ASK NAUTILUS
Okay, so. Actually
placing the bird cages in different rooms would work with what you originally described. As in, you're in room 12, you put the cages in the room to the left of you (room 11) and they get disturbed, meaning something moved in room 10. In this scenario, you would be able to hear movement in a room that is
not directly the neighbor of the room that
you, yourself, are in.
However, from what you described in the first quote...
It honestly reads as if you move into a room, you place the cage on one side of
that particular room, and if something moves into the room on that side, then your birds cause a fuss.
Your second quote suggests that you always thought they were in room 11? Did you specifically tell Nautilus "I put the cages in room 11", or what?
Basically, I want to know what you tell Nautilus to perform your role action. If it's literally just:

"Hey, Nautilusqt, I'm moving to room 10 for N1. I would like to monitor the activity of the room on the right."
Or some variant of "I am putting the bird cages on the left/right", then you'd be placing them in your room.
